Getting to know stem cells

The scholar stem cell lab-project is based on the cooperation between the link Friderico-Francisceum Gymnasiums of Bad Doberan, the University of Rostock and IRMED e. V. Since 2006, up to 10 pupils of grade 11 have had the possibility to obtain their marks in the scholar stem cell lab instead of attending a regular class in Biology. Although working in the scholar stem cell lab typically requires more efforts than a regular class the pupils are very interested and the available positions are quickly filled every year. The topics dealt with in the scholar stem cell lab depend on the scholar curriculum and also vary according to current issues.

The pupils are supervised by scientists of the IRMED-laboratories. The scholar stem cell lab starts with a trial lesson lasting several days in February. Then, at the end of the school year, the pupils pass their two-week practical training including lectures, talks, as well as practical lab-work. At the end of the scholar stem cell lab, the pupils present and defense their work. The lab-language is English.
